Several assessment tools exist in order to identify the occupational difficulties experienced by various individuals. However, occupational therapists may be confronted with occupational problems for which no assessment tool has yet been developed or disseminated. When an occupational therapist begins to develop a new tool, how can he or she ensure its content validity? The literature review we conducted revealed that among the occupational therapy papers on the development of new assessment tools, very few describe their content validation process, and those that do describe it superficially. The purpose of this article is to support any occupational therapist who wishes to validate the content of a new or existing assessment tool by providing a step-by-step procedure. To illustrate each of these steps, concrete examples from the content validation of the Répertoire français des valeurs liées à l'ergothérapie (RFVE) are given.
